Alpenglow Biosciences joins SPACE-MEL European doctoral network

Alpenglow Biosciences has joined SPACE-MEL as an associated partner, contributing to a new European doctoral network designed to train the next generation of spatial biologists and advance the clinical application of spatial single-cell omics.

Coordinated by the KU Leuven Institute for Single Cell Omics, LISCO, SPACE-MEL brings together universities, clinical centers, technology developers, and industry partners across Europe and beyond. The consortium has secured approximately €5.5 million through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks program and will train 15 doctoral candidates.

The program will provide integrated training across spatial imaging, molecular biology, computational biology, pathology, and biomarker discovery. Its goal is to equip researchers with the interdisciplinary expertise needed to connect advanced technologies and complex datasets with meaningful biological and clinical questions.

SPACE-MEL will apply this integrated approach to melanoma, including rare and understudied forms such as mucosal melanoma, as well as early-stage disease where predicting progression remains a significant clinical challenge.

As an associated partner, Alpenglow will contribute expertise in intact-tissue 3D imaging and AI-driven spatial analysis. Alpenglow’s technologies are designed to preserve and quantify tissue architecture across complete samples, helping researchers examine cellular organization, spatial relationships, and biological heterogeneity beyond individual tissue sections.

This perspective complements the network’s broader objective of connecting spatial imaging, molecular information, computational analysis, pathology, and clinical research. Through exposure to both academic and industry environments, doctoral researchers will gain experience translating emerging spatial technologies into practical approaches for studying disease.

SPACE-MEL is coordinated by Prof. Francesca Maria Bosisio, MD, PhD, Co-Founder of LISCO and Lead Pathologist of its Spatial Proteomics unit. Drawing on her own experience as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow, Prof. Bosisio has emphasized the importance of international mobility, interdisciplinary training, and industry exposure in developing future scientific leaders.
